Heidi’s Gift ( Haiji no Okurimono )

Takeo Takahashi, Makiko Yamazaki, illus.

Beautiful gift book with many illustrations (most in full color) that reveals the Bible principles and Christian themes in the story of Heidi by Johanna Spyri (1880). In Japan the story was made into a TV animation series entitled Heidi, Girl of the Alps (1974) and a feature length movie (1979), all of which made the story well known to Japanese people. But this book shows the faith in God by the characters in the original story that Japanese may not know about. For example: When Heidi is away from the mountains and living in the city with Clara, Clara's grandmother teaches Heidi that she can always seek relief in her troubles by praying to God. When Heidi returns to the mountains, she teaches her embittered and reclusive grandfather about the comfort of prayer. She assures him that it is never too late to turn back to God. Her simple words prompt her grandfather to go down to the village and attend a church service for the first time in years, marking an end to his isolation. He is heartily welcomed back by the pastor and the villagers. This message of God’s love and forgiveness is Heidi’s gift to us. Forest Books. B6 size, 176 pp.
