Home Use DVD. Starring Joseph Fiennes as a Roman tribune, Clavius, who is assigned by Pilate (Peter Firth) to oversee the crucifixion of Yeshua and watches him die. Then when the body he sealed in the tomb disappears, he and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), try to find the body to prevent rumors of a risen Messiah and a possible uprising in Jerusalem before the emperor visits. He digs up corpses and interrogates witnesses (including Mary Magdalene and an infectiously joyful disciple Bartholomew) to try to find out what happened. He finally gets the story out of one of the guards he had left at the tomb. The evidence for the resurrection is seen through the eyes of a nonbeliever who struggles with the implications and then comes face to face with the risen Yeshua. What will he do now? The loving character of Yeshua and the fearlessness of his disciples are striking. This is very dramatic, well acted and produced and is very accurate in historical details of Roman military culture. The Shroud of Turin appears, Magdalene was a prostitute and the ascension is not where Luke says it happened, but overall it is quite close to the biblical accounts. It will encourage believers and challenge nonbelievers to look at the evidence for the resurrection. 107 minutes. Rated PG-13.
