Mary

Rental/Library/Public Use DVD. European movie introduces Jesus Christ from a woman’s viewpoint by focusing on Mary, the mother of Jesus, with 2 other largely fictionalized women characters interwoven into the story to contrast with Mary’s strong faith. The Mary Magdalene character is almost entirely a fictional creation until the very end of the movie when she is seen as the biblical character at the cross and resurrection of Christ. The script introduces Magdalene as Mary’s friend from Nazareth who falls under the evil influence of Herodias, becomes part of Herod’s household and falls progressively further into sin. She is portrayed as the woman caught in adultery rescued by Jesus and as the woman who washes Jesus’ feet. She repents and is shown turning to Jesus (and reconciling with Mary) while Jesus is telling the story of the Prodigal Son. Although the Herodias character is based on the history of the Herod family fairly accurately portrayed in the movie, she is presented as an agent of Satan with supernatural knowledge who works against God’s plan. Herodias tries to eliminate Mary as a child, manipulates Magdalene to get John the Baptist arrested, and stands next to the high priest when he calls for Jesus’ crucifixion. Magdalene and Herodias vividly contrast with Mary’s unyielding love for God and her faith in Jesus. Even when her family members say Jesus has rejected them, she responds, “He is my lord.” She alone believes Jesus will rise again. Jesus is a loving and compassionate son and dies on the cross expressing God’s love for mankind, but the substitutionary nature of his death for our sin is not spelled out. His resurrection is victorious over Satan and death. 9280
