Home Use DVD. Director Martin Scorsese's dramatization of the novel by Shusaku Endo. In the 17th century, two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to Japan in an attempt to locate their mentor, Ferreira, who is rumored to have committed apostasy, and to encourage underground Christians persecuted under the ban on Christianity by the Tokugawa Shogun ruler. Rodrigues and Garpe are captured and ordered to step on a "fumie" image of Christ to declare their denial of the faith in order to save Japanese Christians from torture and execution. 162 minutes. Special additions to the packaging include a DVD with a fascinating talk on the historical background of the hidden Christians of the 265-year-long Tokugawa Era by journalist/historian Yoshimasa Moribe and a pamphlet detailing the life of Father Chiara, the model for the character of Father Rodrigues in the novel/movie.
