Based on a true story, a salesman-turned-pastor (John Corbett) of tiny All Saints Episcopal church in rural Smyrna, Tennessee, is ordered to shut it down. But believing he hears the voice of God, he attempts to save the church, as well as a group of Karen refugees from Burma, by planting vegetables on church land. "Its characters speak frequently of the power of prayer and signs from God, (but) “All Saints” isn’t preachy or heavy-handed." (Ebert) "It certainly doesn't neglect its religious themes. But it mainly stresses the humanity of its characters and the importance of community ties. It does this in a manner that is never heavy-handed, making the true-life tale all the more inspiring." (Hollywood Reporter) The real church and some real parishioners are in the movie.

"""Mack"" Philips (Sam Worthington) took his three children on a family camping trip. The older girl and boy decided to take a last canoe ride before heading home. As their canoe overturned, and Mack went to rescue them, his back was turned and the unspeakable happened. Mack's youngest daughter, Missy, was abducted by a known child predator. After a massive search, evidence of Missy showed up at an abandoned shack. Although they never found her body, everyone knew the worst had happened. For the next four years ""a great sadness"" fell over Mack and his family, until a note from God showed up in his mailbox inviting him to come to the shack. He takes his friend's 4-wheel-drive truck and drives into the mountains to the shack and encounters the Trinity. God the Father is seen as a middle-aged African-American woman, called Papa (Mack's wife's favorite name for God) or Elousia (Victoria Spencer), who looks like a friendly, pie-baking neighbor from childhood (same actress). Jesus is seen as a Jewish carpenter with an Israeli accent (of course, right on). The Holy Spirit is seen as a Japanese woman with the Hindi word for wind, Sarayu, as a name. This succeeds well in getting past the stereotype that some people have of God as an old white American male who is vengeful and cruel. Mack always uses male forms in addressing and referring to the Trinity, and the entire experience is presented as part of Mack's thoughts while hospitalized and unconscious from an accident that occurred while driving to the shack. So some could say it is all in his mind, but then there is the physical typed note that showed up in his mailbox to account for. The story takes overwhelming heartache and portrays God’s healing power in our lives through encountering the Trinity. This is an imaginative way of showing God relates to us in love and forgiveness. Mack learns that God is with him in his pain and learns to trust God with Missy and even forgive his abusive father. 132 minutes."

The Innocents (Yoake no Inori)
new
Code.49091 Price: 4104
French movie (Les Innocentes). Luminescent, unflinchingly honest and respectful of religion, director Anne Fontaine's 2016 drama about a fictional Benedictine convent in post- World War II Poland gently explores the conflicts between duty to the living and the shattered faith that can result from acts of depravity. The screenplay is loosely based on the real-life exploits of Madeleine Pauliac, an atheist French Red Cross doctor, renamed Mathilde, who is helping survivors of death camps and wounded French soldiers. After delivering the baby of a young nun, the physician is told the horrible story: Several months earlier, invading Soviet soldiers, believing it to be their right, raped the sisters, leaving at least seven of them pregnant, and the abbess infected with syphilis. The film explores how believers respond to awful times with faith and doubt with well-developed characters. The final scene shows the nuns have moved from their isolation to now running an orphanage that cares for the babies and the street children. But this is obviously a solidly adult picture, and not for those in search of casual fare. Mature themes. Rated PG-13 or A-14. In French with Japanese subtitles. 111 minutes.

Home Use DVD. Based on the true story. By government mandate, in 1973 Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Alabama becomes racially integrated. Tensions are high in the school and the city. Tony Nathan (Caleb Castille), a gifted high school black football player, and other black students join the football team. As cross burnings and riots erupt in the city, Tandy Gerelds (Nic Bishop), the Woodlawn Colonels football coach, struggles to ease racial tensions between his players. It's only when Gerelds allows Hank Erwin (Sean Astin), an outsider who is a sports chaplain, to speak to his team that real change begins. Hank, who has been radically affected by the message of hope and love he experienced at the Explo'72 Christian revival meeting (with Billy Graham), tells the players a "better way" is possible through following Jesus. More than 40 players, nearly the entire team, black and white, give their lives over to Jesus Christ and the spiritual change has a profound effect on the coach, the school and the community. The spiritual revival and racial reconciliation spread to other schools, including rivals. The team makes an astounding run at the playoffs, leading to the largest attendance ever at a high school football game at the state championship game. Legendary University of Alabama football coach "Bear" Bryant (Jon Voight) recruits Tony for college football. Exhilarating movie! 123 minutes.

Home Use DVD. Starring Joseph Fiennes as a Roman tribune, Clavius, who is assigned by Pilate (Peter Firth) to oversee the crucifixion of Yeshua and watches him die. Then when the body he sealed in the tomb disappears, he and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), try to find the body to prevent rumors of a risen Messiah and a possible uprising in Jerusalem before the emperor visits. He digs up corpses and interrogates witnesses (including Mary Magdalene and an infectiously joyful disciple Bartholomew) to try to find out what happened. He finally gets the story out of one of the guards he had left at the tomb. The evidence for the resurrection is seen through the eyes of a nonbeliever who struggles with the implications and then comes face to face with the risen Yeshua. What will he do now? The loving character of Yeshua and the fearlessness of his disciples are striking. This is very dramatic, well acted and produced and is very accurate in historical details of Roman military culture. The Shroud of Turin appears, Magdalene was a prostitute and the ascension is not where Luke says it happened, but overall it is quite close to the biblical accounts. It will encourage believers and challenge nonbelievers to look at the evidence for the resurrection. 107 minutes. Rated PG-13.

Home use DVD. The NHK TV Asadora year-long morning drama program (daily for 15 minutes, repeated in the afternoon) often has fictionalized stories of the lives of historical women in Japan. Some heroines have been Christians whose lives and thinking were influenced by the Bible. This DVD focuses on three of those women: (1.) Asako Hirooka (1849-1919) was the model for the heroine in the program Asa ga Kita. She born into a wealthy merchant family and fought social expectations of her role and championed women’s education and rights. She developed a coal mining business and financial services for women that eventually became a bank and an insurance company. At age 60 she became a Christian and promoted the Osaka YWCA and evangelism. She greatly influenced Hanako Muraoka. (2.) Hanako Muraoka (1893-1968) translated Ann of Green Gables and other children’s literature into Japanese and was the model for the heroine of the program Hanako to An. She studied English at Toyo Eiwa Girls School (Methodist). She became a children’s author and radio broadcaster of children’s programs. She barely rescued her translation of Ann of Green Gables from the WW2 bombing of Tokyo. She had a strong Christian faith that is reflected in her novels. (3.) Rita Taketsuru (1896-1961) was the model for the heroine in the program Massan. She was born Jesse Roberta Cowan in Scotland where she met Masataka Taketsuru and married him. She came to Japan and supported her husband in his drive to open the first whisky distillery in Japan. She endured public hostility during WW2 as a foreigner even though she was a naturalized Japanese. She was known as a devout Christian who left her mark on many people and the town of Yoichi in Hokkaido where a school and a street are named after her.
