The Staff That Unwaveringly Supports Our Lives

The Staff That Unwaveringly Supports Our Lives
(Jinsei o Sasaeru Yuruganu Tsue)

Shigeru Noda
Tract for senior citizens with large print. Remember the old riddle? “What walks on 4s in the morning, 2 legs at noon and 3 in evening?” Answer: humans. We crawl as babies, stand and walk on 2 legs as we grow up and then need a cane when old. As our society ages we see many with canes. In the Bible the cane or staff symbolizes support and comfort in life, as in a shepherd’s staff. (Psalm 23:4) Or it symbolizes authority, as in Moses’ staff as he represented God. (Exodus 4:2) For Jacob his staff represented his one support for his life when he had nothing to lean on but God. (Genesis 32:10) We live with many people but life is an individual journey. We are born with nothing and die with nothing. Jesus Christ is that staff for us. Only Jesus gives us support, authority and comfort. If we rely on him we will not stumble, and when we cross death’s river we can pass through Heaven’s gate. Won’t you too take ahold of this staff?

When he died for us on the cross he took our sins. Afterward, when the women came the 3rd day to put fragrant spices on his body, they discovered he had risen. This is celebrated around the world at Easter. When Jesus took our sins as our substitute on the cross it showed his deep love. And afterward when he was victorious over death he gives us hope. Yoshimasa Moribe
Yae Yamamoto is the subject of a TV drama aired in 2013 and is shown as a courageous woman in wartime with the spirit of Aizu (Fukushima) as her backbone. Moving from Fukushima to Kyoto in 1871, she entered a new school for women, studied English and joined a Bible class offered by a missionary named Gordon. Her encounter with the Bible changed her understanding of the world. She learned of the God who created the universe and loves humans and she found truth in Christ. In 1875 she met Joh Niijima who had just returned to Japan from the US and wanted to make the Bible the foundation of a new Japan. She helped him found what is now Doshisha University (photos). On January 2, 1876, Yae was baptized as a Christian and the next day married Niijima in the first Protestant wedding in Japan. Together they traveled the country sharing the gospel of Christ in public meetings and ministered in a church they started in Kyoto. Why did the Bible have so great influence on Yae and others in the Meiji Era? Yae said, “truth is in Christ.” Jesus Christ himself said “I am the way, the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) Won’t you too check out this Bible that is so influential?
